Where is the Birthday Boy?

When we keep God out of our plans

It was one of the best sixth birthdays witnessed on Mee Street. A very colourful, paw patrol-themed decorations, with balloons and banners that matched with table wares and other exotic accessories.

The event was held at the popular community park, one of the most expensive around. This enabled the festive ambience for various activities like face painting, costume contest, scavenger treasure hunt, and other interesting games for different age group.

The food was abundant, and the music was loud.

It was time to cut the giant “six-tier” cake, with each step featuring each of the rescue dogs.

“Where is Sam?” the birthday boy’s mum called out. It was at this point everyone realised no one had seen Sam around.

Pandemonium broke out as everyone ran around, looking for Sam.

After thirty minutes of desperate search, Sam was found at the other end of the garden, seated quietly in front of a lake and throwing stones into the waters.

When his Mum asked about his strange behaviour, Sam signed back to his Mum.

“This party was all about you and not me. You didn’t ask me what I wanted. Nothing about today depicts me. Dogs are not my favourite pets, neither can I hear the music. If you had asked me, I would have chosen something quiet and fun like sitting in front of a lake and fishing with friends, while we had burgers and chips.”

Does this ring a bell? When we complete all our plans and suddenly remember we did not commit it into God’s hands. Or quite common, we remember God only when we have reached a brick wall and need immediate help.

The truth is, we do not have any plan of our own, except the ones God ordains. This is the reason we need to start with him and walk with him every step of the way.

We humans keep brainstorming options and plans, but God’s purpose prevails. It is only human to want to make a buck, but it’s better to be poor than a liar. Fear-of-God is life itself, a full life, and serene — no nasty surprises. (Proverbs 19: 21–23, MSG)
